Power Flow studies and State Estimation provide the foundation for power system analysis in both planning and operations for electric utilities. Big and small decisions are made based on the results of these studies – but what happens if the power flow solution diverges during contingency analysis (cannot find a solution)? This often happens when contingencies are applied and the power flow analysis cannot find a solution.

BSI Smart Power Flow Solver is an innovative software application or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to support any issues in power flow and state estimation computation.

The Smart Power Flow solver can:

  • Identify whether a power flow solution exists
  • Obtain an accurate power flow solution if one exists (the same for state estimation)
  • Provide methods to restore the power flow solution if one does not exist

The Smart Power Flow solver was developed in partnership with the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) and leverages strong proprietary technology such as homotopy-based algorithms, Trust-Tech-guided optimization, and Quasi-Gradient System (QGS) methods. This tool can be used for both operations and planning groups to either run in parallel or serve as back-up support in the event of power flow divergence (or state estimation divergence).
