Intelligent Electronic Book for Engineering

The Intelligent Electronic Book for Engineering (IEBE) is a flexible document platform for maintaining, updating, distributing, enhancing and creating company information and intelligence through the use of interactive, multi-media and knowledge-based components. Through the use of the IEBE technology, engineering information moves to interactive, kinetic, configurable presentations. The IEBE provides the ability to dynamically modify or fabricate books by adding annotations, filtering content, reconfiguring the presentation, or fabricating entirely new materials.

Application areas – Corporate

  • Manufacturers’ Instructions (application notes, installation guides)
  • Equipment Maintenance and Test Guides
  • Safety information (hazardous materials, hazardous situations, working smart, injury avoidance
  • Company policy manuals
  • Employee handbooks

Application areas – Departmental

  • Engineering Design Drawing
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Training Manuals
  • Construction Standards
  • Equipment Specifications
  • Purchasing descriptions

Cost-effective information distribution

Your labor and material costs to prepare, print, collate and distribute bulky paper books and manuals are eliminated.

Easy document update

Electronic manuals can be issued often since the costly and labor-intensive maintenance of the bulky paper binder is eliminated. Page and section updates are available immediately by connecting to the company document center server.

Easy document distribution

A CD-ROM or networked electronic distribution replaces bulky paper binders.

Easy to use

A point-and-click style user interface makes searching and retrieving information easy. Users with little computer background are able to begin productive work almost immediately.

Easy document fabrication

The IEBE provides the ability to quickly fabricate subsets of books that can be printed for special projects or targeted distribution.

Improved access to information

Using BSI’s powerful search engine, users can find engineering information very quickly. Cross-referencing documents using a hyperlink allows users to select a topic or definition and move there immediately. Speedy navigation of the material aids understanding as the users can focus exclusively on their information need.

Improved information sharing

Selected pages, markups, and personal notes can be printed, emailed, or moved to a user-defined file using several mouse-clicks. All this is done without having to extract pages from a binder or searching to return pages to a binder in the proper order.

Consistent, flexible presentation

Engineering documents published using BSI’s IEBE can easily respond to special needs of a segment of your user community by implementing custom linkages and knowledge base extensions.

Multi-media documentation

Embedding video, audio, animation, color and other new media techniques can enhance understanding and productivity.

Embedded CAD&D drawings

IEBE pages can be linked to high precision Computer-Aided Design and Drafting documents for detailed vector graphics displays and viewing using pan and zoom.

Documents with Active Display

IEBE pages link to source documents in other areas of the company, such as, material descriptions available from purchasing, engineering specifications, safety tips, or account information. This active link results in up-to-date information every time the IEBE is opened with a link to these documents.

Easy to adapt information to suit user needs

Since the documents stored in the IEBE are supplemented by the computer platform, front-end and process aids can be developed to help less experienced and occasional users.

Knowledge repository system

The IEBE built-in expert systems shell provides the ability to create a knowledge repository to capture your senior staff’s expertise for use by all employees.

Personal notes creation and management

Using IEBE functions each book user can create personal notes, which are attached to a specific page or section of the document.

Web-based flexibility

The IEBE platform uses web se rvers and browsers to allow the distribution and use of company documents on the Corporate Intranet or stand-alone web servers.

Choice of implementation strategy

The IEBE platform is designed to use CD-ROM and high-speed network technologies so that documents are easy to transport and users always have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. You can choose an implementation approach that is CD-based, Intranet-based or a mix of both.

On-the-spot Problem solving tools

Service employees working in the field interact with an intelligent rule-based assistant and access complete and current information to solve a problem on the spot with speed, efficiency and knowledge that is not possible using hardcopy pages.
